TOUR Nº2: THE MAGIC PENINSULA.

This excursion combines two excellent destinations on their own right, plus minor stops along a large península in Chiloé Island. While one of the main destination is outstanding as an observatory for marine birds, the other one boasts an interesting medley of freswater, brackish and salt water wetlands. Obviously, both areas are also serviceable for countryside and forest birds, with almost guaranteed sightings of the nice Desmurs’ Wiretail. Usual yield: 55-65 species.

TOUR Nº3: THE BAY OF MANY FACES.

Here low tide brings thousands of shorebirds to the mudflats around a river mouth as well as a small peninsula. Notable species here include Hudsonian Godwit, Red Knot, Black-necked Swan, Snowy-crowned Tern, Chilean Flamingo (winter), Flightless Steamer-Duck, and Magellanic Oystercat-cher just to mention a few. Groves and small rivers put forward a supporting cast with Grass Wren, Ringed Kingfisher, Plumbeous Rail, Magellan Snipe, etc. Usual yield: 50-65 species.

TOUR Nº4: DAUGHTER OF THE EARTHQUAKE.

An ideal outing for anyone staying at Ancud. This wetland is part earthquake-made when back in 1960 a river dramatically sunk and widened due to the strongest seismic event in history. The tour starts with five small urban lakes (where the Ringed Kingfisher is usually sighted), follows with a survey over the sand banks revealed  by the morning low tide, an inlet favoured by Hudsonian Godwits and Red Knots, and finally the secret haunt of Black Skimmers and Terns. Usual yield: 45-55 species.

TOUR Nº5: THE WILD AND LUSH COASTLINE

A choice trek along the Pacific coast of Chiloé Island, whose main attraction is the coincidence of both Spheniscus penguin species breeding in a point connected to mainland during low tide. Not only penguins nest here, but Kelp Geese, South American Terns, and Flightless Steamer-Ducks also do it, so any visit must follows a code of conduct in order not to disturbe its precious wildlife. Mammals are equally nice in this area, with probable sightings of Southern Sea Lion, Marine Otter, Pudu (allegedly the smallest deer on earth) and maybe the beautiful Darwin´s (or Chiloé) Fox. Usual yield: 35-50 species.
