Chiloe Birding

WHO WE ARE

Chepu Adventures & Austral Adventures have team up and advantageously combined our different abilities after the same goal: to provide Chiloé visitors with a wide array of nature-oriented tourism offer, which spans from kayaking to specialized birdwatch, passing through eco-camping, trekking, and other outdoors activities.

Amory & Fernando

Back in 1994, we –as millions of other people certainly– were getting our fill of Santiago madness.  Then when we visited Chiloé for the first time together, we naturally felt the need to move to this unique land where Nature, Mythology, and Culture mingle in so unparalleled way. But Chiloé also featured a somewhat overwhelming number of nice places to choose from. We surveyed the island during months in search of the right spot.

Simultaneous to this process was a project of self-sustenance based on solar panels, wind energy, deep-cycled batteries, greenhouses, rain-collectors, etc. all of which would be part of our lives once settled. The place short-listing process met a hasty end when Chepu came in front of our eyes, and with an invisible magician’s wand erased all competitors for good: this was the place we were looking for.

Years of hard-working  during which we had to master knowledge and abilities to cope with starting from an absolute zero, since we did not know anything about working the land or the names of local flora and fauna  …uf!    Now, with the benefit of hindsight, we are able to see that backbone-breaking period as the one when the seeds of the present satisfaction were sown.

After all these years we are proud to introduce “Chepu Adventures” as a leading company promoting the knowledge and protection of nature through low-impact outdoors activities as kayaking, trekking, eco-camping, bird watching, and photography available to anyone.

We feel that sharing nature is a way to preserve it:  If you know it, you love it - when you love it, you take care of it.

Britt

Austral Adventures was born traveling.  After years of exploring in remote areas, we fell in love with the charm and beauty of the islands of Chiloe and their continental counterpart- Patagonia.  The allure of the glacier topped Andes, endless fjords, and pristine rivers among the dense rainforest was only heightened by the area's inaccessibility.  Meanwhile, seemingly hidden among nature's grandeur lies a centuries-old culture rich in folklore and culinary delights.  This cultural and natural beauty sparked the many ideas and concerted efforts that made the company a reality.

Specializing in small group excursions on land and comfortable cruises, the tours are designed for discerning travelers who wish to experience more than just the beautiful sights by promoting interaction with the local culture and education about the regional flora and fauna.  Another major focus is to tap the knowledge and expertise of Chiloé Island by employing as many people from the area and using as many local products as possible.

The rest of the Austral Team is made up of a wonderful mix of people from Chiloé and abroad.  Each member brings special skills to our effort, from our experienced local captain to our multilingual international guides.  Our guides speak English, Spanish, French and German.

Britt Lewis- Director
Trained in wilderness medicine (WEMT) and experienced as a backcountry guide and SCUBA divemaster, Britt came to Chile to explore both the mountains and sea.  After several years in Chile working for a travel guide and agency, he found the perfect outlet for his skills and dreams.  His travel and tourism experience proved the perfect background for the creation Austral Adventures.  So he set out in 1998 to build a 50 ft (15m) traditional vessel designed specifically for tourism with an experienced boat builder from Chiloe... Whether at sea or on the computer,  Britt strives ceaselessly to achieve perfection.
